The Summer Camps kids beg to go to!

Ages 3-4 or 5-6

Our NEW Lil Campers summer camp program!

My name is Brooke, and I am excited and eager to meet your child and have a super fun time with them this summer. I have been working with children in a variety of recreation settings for over 20 years and have three children of my own. I  am certified in First Aid and CPR and have obtained Police Security Clearance. I have some very important information for you to help create the best camp experience for your child.

CHILD/STAFF RATIOS

To ensure the best experience and safety for your child, we will have a maximum of 8 children in a camp with 1 leader (myself) and 2 volunteers.

WHAT TO BRING...

Please label ALL of your child’s belongings and bring them in a backpack each day.  Dress your child appropriately for the weather and feel free to pack an extra layer as some parts of our building can get a little chilly. Comfortable and appropriate clothing that allows your little one to enjoy all types of activities is best.

  • Shorts and t-shirt

  • Long sleeve shirt and pants

  • Sunscreen and bug spray (please apply prior to camp)

  • Clean indoor shoes and socks

  • Swimsuit, towel and plastic bag for wet items

  • Water bottle

  • Peanut free snack

POTTY TRAINING

All preschool campers MUST be fully potty-trained at the start of the camp and must be the age of three. No exceptions. Children in pull-ups or diapers will not be permitted in camp and Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre reserves the right to withdraw a child from camp if not fully potty-trained. Our staff will assist in toileting by assisting your child in dressing themselves. We do understand accidents happen, however we are not equipped to assist in potty-training. If a serious toileting accident does occur, you may be called to come to the aid of your child.

PARTICIPATION

If this is your child’s first time at camp, it may be overwhelming. Our staff are chosen for their ability to remain calm while encouraging and comforting your child in their new environment. We expect that some children may want to observe for a while and may cry when they are dropped off. We strongly recommend a quick drop-off as it is best for your child’s emotions and allows us to support the development of independence. We use encouraging and play strategies to overcome any sadness, fear and separation anxiety and find that within 10 minutes they are engaged with the other children. If we feel your child is experiencing a serious difficulty, we will call to ask your suggestions on other strategies or ask you to pick up your child.

MOVING THROUGH THE FACILITY

We will travel to each activity within the facility together as a group. A supervisor will lead the group from the front and back and children will be paired with a buddy.

TIPS FOR FIRST TIME CAMPERS

Will this be your child's first time at a day camp? We want to make sure your child has a fun and successful experience. Here are a few ideas to help with the transition time.

  • Send your child with a picture of you that they can keep in their backpack and take out when they are missing you or feeling sad.

  • Parents are asked not to remain and watch their children once camp begins. The growth and independence gained from a first camp experience is optimized when the child knows that they have achieved a milestone on their own.

  • Check out the book “The Kissing Hand”. It is a sweet story about growing pains and missing those we love and has been used by many to reassure children upset by separation anxiety.

SUNSCREEN AND BUG SPRAY

Please apply sunscreen and bug spray before camp and send both containers to camp labelled with your child’s name. Our leaders will assist your child in re-applying when necessary. They will only use the child’s products and no sharing will be permitted.

WHAT CAMP IS BEST FOR MY LIL CAMPER

We understand that some children are more comfortable being with different age groups or that they would prefer to be paired with a sibling.  Our camps are divided by age to best suit the needs of the children, however if you would like to put your Lil Camper in a camp and they do not meet the age requirements please contact me and I will do my best to accommodate your request.  I can be reached at bsabourin@slsfsc.com

PRE/POST CARE

This summer there will not be pre or post care offered.  If this is something you would like to see offered in our half day camps please let us know so we can look into providing this service next summer.
